Points of Interest along the way
Lake Hawea A stunning 20-minute drive from Wanaka is Lake Hawea which borders Mt Aspiring National Park. If you follow this road for another 140kms you will go through Makarora on your way to the West Coast. This long and narrow lake covers 143 square kilometers (469 square miles). It's much quieter than Wanaka and Queenstown and often you can be the only person standing admiring the beauty of the mountainous. Home to some legendary fishing spots, Lake Hawea is an outdoor adventurers’ paradise. |
Hawea Whitewater Park The Hawea Wave is a real ride for those that brave the cold water. It's Free to use and has two different grades and a smaller wave at the top, which is fun to learn. The lower or bottom wave is bigger and this is where the pro's come to practice their kayak skills or surfing tricks. On any day you might see three or four people lined up to take their turn. |
